Phylogenetic Analysis of RecA Genes (Eisen 1995)

Lloyd and Sharp (1993) first addressed the possibility of using phylogenetic analysis of recA genes as a tool to study bacterial evolutionary relationships. I have followed up their analysis using the sequences of 40 additional recA genes that have been entered into the databases in the last few years (Eisen, 1995). To establish that RecA can be a model for molecular systematics studies of bacteria I first generated phylogenetic trees of the 65 available RecA proteins using multiple parsimony and distance based techniques. I have compared the RecA trees to each other (to get an idea of the robustness of the inferred patterns to the different assumptions of the phylogenetic techniques used) and to trees of ss-rRNA genes from essentially the same set of species generated using the same techniques. Using the same species-set and the same techniques allows the comparison of the robustness and resolution of the trees of the two molecules directly while removing the complication of different species sampling.
